Overview
Kerio Control supports L2TP (Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol). Internet providers may use this protocol for creating a tunnel for connecting you to the internet.
This article shares the processes of configuring the L2TP tunnel with and without public IP addresses.
Note: Kerio Control also uses L2TP with the IPsec VPN solution.
Prerequisites
To configure the L2TP tunnel you need the following information from your internet provider:
- The L2TP server hostname; and
- The username and password for accessing the L2TP server.
Configuring L2TP Tunnel Without Public IP Addresses
Note: You need to use the L2TP interface when your provider uses L2TP for connecting you to the internet.
Follow these steps:
- In the administration interface, go to Interfaces.
- Click Add > L2TP.
- In the L2TP Interface Properties dialog, type a new interface name and leave the Interface Group as it is.
- On the Dialing Settings tab, type the L2TP server hostname, username, and password.
- Set time intervals for connecting persistently, disconnecting and hanging up. When the time intervals exceed, the link hangs up automatically.
- (Optional) Click Advanced to view and modify Authentication methods and Security point-to-point encryption (MPPE) settings, as seen in the screenshot below.
- Click OK to save the configuration.
Note: When the Status is Up in the Interfaces section, the L2TP tunnel is active. Go to the dial log for more details about L2TP communications and dialing the line.
Configuring L2TP Tunnel With Public IP Addresses
If your provider uses a public IP address in the L2TP interface, perform these additional steps:
- In the administration interface, go to Interfaces.
- Change Internet connectivity to Multiple Internet Links - Load Balancing.
- Click Add > L2TP.
- In Interface Group, select Internet Interfaces.
- Enable Use for Link Load Balancing in the L2TP Interface Properties dialog.
- Disable Use for Link Load Balancing in the Ethernet Interface Properties dialog.
- Save the settings.
Confirmation
When the Status is Up in the Interfaces section, the L2TP tunnel is active.
